About

Julie Barnes

In recent years Julie served as the director of Marin Academy’s (MA) Wilderness Outings Program, and taught a variety of courses that included Comparative Religion and English. In addition, she was part of the Marin Academy team that designed and implemented orientation curriculum for new students and the Wilderness Rites of Passage Program that marks the end of a student’s time at MA.

In reflecting on this work, Julie observed,

“The eight years that I have been involved in evolving these programs fuels my belief that how we welcome one another into community and how we prepare to integrate our experiences into our next stage in life matters, and has an impact on our capacity to live into our full potential. Tending to these elements of semester students’ lives is something I love doing as Dean of Students.”

Julie received her BA in Anthropology from Bowdoin College, earned a Master’s in Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a Master’s in Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.  Julie is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and is humbled by the way she gets to share in the lives of students, families, and faculty through her work at Maine Coast Semester.

What Brought Me to Chewonki?

Julie has felt a strong draw to the Chewonki community since she first set foot on campus fifteen years ago to visit friends who were then teaching at Maine Coast Semester. Her affinity for Chewonki evolved as she worked closely with Two Roads Maine, a former Chewonki program.
