About

Carter Ramquist

Growing up in North Carolina, my connection to people and place was nurtured by the environment around me. My involvement with SOOTS, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of aging blues musicians in the NC Piedmont region, sparked an early curiosity about community relationships, power structures, and their relationships to the physical environment.

My academic journey took me to Wellesley College, where I majored in Anthropology with a minor in Religious Studies. There, I developed skills that translated into significant experience in the legal field and had the opportunity to live and study border identity and politics in Nepal with SIT (School for International Training). This culminated in a research project on the illicit art market and trade of religious objects in South Asia—a passion I continue to engage with today.

In addition to my work at Camp Onaway, I have pursued my passion for education by coaching crew at both the high school and collegiate levels while balancing a full-time role in the legal field. I have also taught swimming to students ranging from babies to advanced racers and coached sailing. Furthermore, during my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to serve my community as the Director of Youth Ministry at Hartford Street Presbyterian Church in Natick, MA.

Now, I am excited to bring my commitment to place-based education to my role in Admissions for Maine Coast Semester. In my free time, you can find me rowing, playing the double bass, or enjoying various games, board or field!

What Brought Me to Chewonki?

My passion for place-based and outdoor education was ignited at Camp Onaway, a traditional all-girls camp in the lakes region of New Hampshire. Immersed in a close-knit, technology-free environment, I served as the head of crew, head of sailing, and head of the waterfront. Living alongside campers, I fostered their self-growth, spirituality, honor, and sense of community. I am thrilled to be in an organization that promotes this kind of learning for a whole semester and strive to do my part to make it the best it can be.
