About

Madeline Brown

Growing up in Rhode Island, my brother and I would spend afternoons running around the woods. We created elaborate maps with special names for each tree and briar bush. On the weekends we often drove to the White Mountains with our parents to hike or cross country ski. These years of place-based play and challenge in the outdoors led me to my first undergraduate degree: Adventure Education.

Through experiential education and challenges in the outdoors, I learned to trust myself to problem solve and rely on those around me. I worked in settings where I felt connected to the environment and my community, conditions that make me feel safe and calm. Through my work in adaptive sports in Vermont, and later as a Direct Care Provider for people with developmental disabilities in Wyoming, I strove to share the magic of adventure and place-based learning with others.

In pursuit of a career that would deepen my clinical knowledge and allow me to work with a wider variety of populations, I returned to school for nursing. As an RN, I have worked in reproductive healthcare in North Carolina and in the emergency department in both NC and Maine.

I am thrilled to have found my way to Chewonki. This role seamlessly integrates nursing with my prior work and life experience. Since moving to Maine I have enjoyed ocean dips, cooking and sharing meals with friends, and taking pottery classes.

What Brought Me to Chewonki?

After working in the emergency department for a couple of years, I was eager to transition into a nursing role that would allow me to develop stronger relationships with those I cared for and spend more time outside. Chewonki’s educational environment, with community and connection to the outdoors central to its mission, was the perfect fit!
