About

Brooke Carmody

While growing up in the suburbs of Washington, DC definitely taught me how to drive in bad traffic, most of the important lessons I have learned in my life I learned in the backcountry of Maine and New Hampshire. My time as a camper at Camp Onaway taught me how to spread my wings and explore my sense of self away from home, how to appreciate the journey of a hard hike even without good views at the summit, and how to live and get along with a roommate or two in a teeny tiny cabin. Most importantly, I learned to love exploring the natural world around me. In my years as a counselor at Camp Onaway, I ran the Fiber & Textile Arts department for two years, the Woodshop for two years, and the Nature program for three years; each summer reaffirmed how much I loved teaching and fostering the natural curiosity students hold for the world around them.

I graduated from the University of Virginia in May of 2024 with a degree in Astronomy, a double minor in Environmental and Computer Science, two years of collegiate rowing experience, three ribbons for competitive ballroom dancing, and two awards for dramatic poetry performance. Since then, I earned my Emergency Medical Technician certification and ran the novice men’s program with Justice Rowing in Falls Church, VA, where my men’s freshmen quad placed fifth in the junior category at the 2025 Virginia Scholastic Rowing championships.

When not helping teach natural history and supporting residential life, I can be found in the wildlife center working with the Center for Environmental Education where I help care for our animal ambassadors and work with them to educate students and adults about the wildlife of Maine.

What Brought Me to Chewonki?

A dear friend of mine told me about her work at Chewonki while catching up over a chilly lake swim in June 2025. When this opportunity came up a couple months later, I jumped at the chance to join such a cool, knowledgeable community of outdoorsy educators. I’ve loved teaching and mentoring since my first assistant coaching gig in middle school, and so being able to help teach a subject I love in a place as awesome as Chewonki was a dream come true. Getting to work in wildlife care and education is the cherry on top!
