Chewonki’s Newest Maine Guide

After grueling written and oral examinations proving her knowledge of Maine rules governing fishing, trapping, hunting, watercraft, ATVs, and snowmobiles, and demonstrating that she could handle herself alone in the woods, and proving she could plan and execute a search for a lost person, Maine Coast Semester math teacher Katherine “Katie” Curtis has–with her characteristic modesty, determination, and competence– become a registered Maine Guide as of April 11.

Maine originally passed a law requiring hunting guides to be licensed by the state in 1897, and the very first person to receive a license was a woman, Cornilia “Fly Rod” Crosby.

Ol’ Fly Rod would no doubt welcome Katie Curtis to the fold. Congratulations, Katie!
