Maine Coast Semester Alumni Take on New Roles and Responsibility at Salt Marsh Farm

Chewonki recently welcomed back Maine Coast Semester 59 alumni Phoebe, and Semester 57 alumni Grayson, as summer farm workers at Salt Marsh Farm. Phoebe, a rising senior at Dwight Englewood School in New Jersey, first came to Chewonki in the fall of 2017. She says the best part of her new role is “hanging out with the animals,” and taking on more responsibility. Giving the ewes and lambs their monthly shots, for example, seemed scary at first. But after some guidance from Chewonki’s more experienced farm workers, Phoebe was able to successfully calm and care for the sheep.

Grayson was a student at Maine Coast Semester during the fall of 2016, and recently graduated from Charlotte Country Day School in North Carolina. Grayson’s favorite part of her new role is harvesting and working in the fields. “Even weeding is physically rewarding.” After she leaves Salt Marsh Farm, Grayson will take a gap year to hike, travel and think about her future plans.

Phoebe and Grayson both have a week left at Salt Marsh Farm, after which Chewonki will welcome new summer farm workers Lily, Ariel and Reid, all alumni from Maine Coast Semester 59.
