Outdoor Adventures at Maine Coast Semester: Wild and Wonderful!

Each semester, our students venture into Maine’s woods and waters for a 5-day wilderness trip. After weeks of preparation, students split into small groups to embark on a unique expedition alongside their classmates and faculty. The experience is a highlight of the Maine Coast Semester. Immersed in some of Maine’s most inspiring landscapes, students challenge themselves in new ways and discover just how much they can accomplish.

This past fall, wilderness trips included backpacking in the Bigelows, sea kayaking in Stonington, and canoeing along the Allagash and St. Croix River. Whether hiking or paddling, all students navigated rugged terrain and enjoyed spectacular views.

In addition to deepening students’ appreciation for the natural world, wilderness trips also provide an amazing opportunity for personal growth. Guided by Chewonki’s skilled outdoor educators, students share daily responsibilities from fire-building to water filtration and meal preparation. Everybody plays an important part to ensure the group’s success. By the end of the trip, students have mastered new skills, increased their capabilities, and forged friendships to last a lifetime.
