Friday! It’s one of my favorite days at Chewonki. Why Fridays are so special? Well, by Friday night we have completed a full week of morning chores, class, two work programs, one science field trip, and lots of laughing during meals. On Friday afternoons, when class is over, all the students have a work program where we help out the Chewonki community in different ways, from working on the farm to sugaring (taping our maple trees and making syrup)! One of the work programs on Friday is Mop and Clean in the Wallace. When I first was assigned to this work program, I thought to myself, “Dang! I just got assigned to mop the dining hall for two hours! That is so boring.” I was happily mistaken.
The first week at Chewonki was so exciting and nerve-racking, mop and clean was a perfect way to learn more about my cabin mates (and now best friends). In the beginning of the two hours I shyly made conversation with the people near me. By the end I was belting the lyrics to “Allstar” by Smash Mouth with Amaya, now one of my best friends. There’s really nothing to cement a friendship like filling mop buckets and wiping down tables together.
There’s more to mop and clean than sweeping the dining room floor while dancing to Queen–we also get to choose a theme for Friday night dinner! So far, our dinner themes have been Pajama Dinner, Night at the Beach, and 80’s-90’s night! All of these themes were thought of by the students. It’s so fun after a crazy week to be able to dress up with your friends and just be silly. Some of my friends for Night at the Beach wore bikinis over their long underwear and brought their towels! After dinner and before our Friday night speaker we usually have a quick dance party in the dining hall or Ellis room (where we have school and morning meeting). With all my great friends we can make anything fun, even the seemingly boring mop and clean.
