Maine Coast Semester 59 joined the Bath community this morning for You Matter Day at Bath Middle School. As reported by the 2015 Maine Youth Health Survey, 49% of high schoolers and 59% of middle schoolers felt that they mattered to the people in their community. The Midcoast Community Alliance wants to make that 100%! To tackle this goal, they asked the local community to help surprise students as they arrived at school on Friday morning with cheering, signs and small tokens of appreciation. About 40 Maine Coast Semester students and faculty members left Chewonki at 6:30am to participate. Some students helped open car doors for arriving middle schoolers while others gave high fives and held up handmade signs. Semester student Oliver (South Kent School, Nanjing, China), said that the “event was really fun.” He had never thought about this problem before and “it was great to see the smiling faces of the kids as we cheered for them.”
Special thanks Austin Muir, Chewonki Waypoints Coordinator, and to Oliver and Chris Percy for the photos.
