It is often said that spring of junior year is a critical time in the college admissions process. We work hard at Chewonki to make sure students are on the same level as their peers not only academically to reintegrate back into the schools they come to us from, but also so they aren’t missing out on college preparation they might be receiving at home. We hosted our annual spring college counseling weekend last week, during which a small group of college counseling/admissions professionals (from sending schools and local colleges) visited Chewonki’s campus. Last Friday evening, we had a panel discussion about the college process, and then Saturday morning, each student was assigned a 30 minute session with one of the counselors, with the goal of discussing progress so far in the college process and how the experience at Chewonki can best be utilized in their applications. We will also set aside an afternoon in the coming weeks for students to tour either Colby or Bates Colleges. Students appreciated this time set aside to talk about this next phase in their educational journeys, although they have also shared that they’re glad we don’t discuss this topic every day!
