In my opinion the most unique class here at Chewonki is Environmental Issues (EI). From one point of view EI is a classic Chewonki class, containing only nine students with very open and involved discussions. What makes EI different is the freedom of curriculum. The class allows students to pursue relevant topics that interest them or affect them personally. The Environmental Issues teacher, Jason Chandler, is another reason for this freedom. He focuses on different issues that we are interested in or we believe to be important. This freedom helps to keep all of us interested and passionate about what we are learning.
Our Independent Research Project (IRP) is another way that the class allows us to learn about the content we want. We are able to choose any Environmental Issue to research and study on our own throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, we present the issue to the class. A majority of the homework for EI is our IRP, which means that the students get to decide what they want to spend time learning. As an EI student, I am enjoying the class and the opportunity to learn about topics that I am passionate about.
